Are solar panels worth it in the UK?

What the answer really depends on — and how to work it out for your home, not a brochure average.

The short answer

For many UK homes solar panels can be worth it, but it genuinely depends on your roof and habits. Households commonly report bill savings in the region of £400–£900 a year and payback periods of roughly 7–12 years, after which the electricity is largely free for the panels' remaining life. The outcome depends on roof orientation and shading, how much power you use during daylight, your tariff, and your export rate — so the same panels pay back very differently on different homes.

Anyone who gives you a single guaranteed savings figure is guessing. What follows is how to judge it honestly for your own situation.

What payback depends on

The factors that decide it

South-facing, unshaded roofs generate most; east–west roofs still work but produce less. The more electricity you use during the day — or store in a battery for the evening — the more of your own generation you avoid buying at import prices. Your import tariff and your SEG export rate then set how much each unit is worth.

Be wary of: savings claims presented as guarantees, or payback figures that assume you use every unit you generate. Real homes export a chunk of their daytime power, which is paid at the lower SEG rate, not your import rate.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I save with solar panels?

Many UK households report savings of roughly £400–£900 a year, but it depends heavily on roof orientation, shading, daytime usage and tariff. Ask for an estimate modelled on your own roof.

What's a realistic payback period?

Commonly around 7–12 years for UK homes, after which the generation is largely free for the remaining life of the panels. Your figure depends on your system, usage and tariff.

Do solar panels work on a north-facing or shaded roof?

They still generate but produce less. East–west roofs are viable; heavy shading from trees or chimneys reduces output and lengthens payback. An installer can model your specific roof.
