The short answer
Solar panel costs in the UK typically range from £5,500 to £12,000 installed. A 4kW system (suits many 3-bed homes) is commonly £6,000–£8,000; a 5–6kW system is £8,500–£11,500; adding battery storage takes a typical system to £9,500–£12,000. Solar carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, after which it is expected to revert to 5%.
System price depends mainly on size (kW), panel and inverter quality, roof complexity and whether you add a battery. The figures below are typical installed prices, not quotes.
Typical UK costs
- 4kW system£6,000–£8,000
- 5–6kW system£8,500–£11,500
- System + battery£9,500–£12,000
- VAT (to 31 Mar 2027)0%
- VAT (from 1 Apr 2027)expected 5%
What drives the price
- System size (kW): the biggest factor — more panels, more output, more cost.
- Panel & inverter quality: higher-efficiency panels and hybrid inverters cost more.
- Roof complexity: scaffolding, roof type, pitch and access all add labour.
- Battery: optional, adds several thousand pounds but increases self-use of your own power.
| System | Typical installed cost | Suits |

| 5–6kW | £8,500–£11,500 | larger homes, higher use |
| + battery | +£2,500–£5,000 | more evening self-use |

The 0% VAT deadline
Until 31 March 2027, residential solar and battery installations carry 0% VAT in the UK. From 1 April 2027 this is expected to return to 5%. On a £8,000 system that relief is worth around £400, so the deadline is a genuine reason not to leave a planned install too late — though it should never be the only reason to buy.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a typical home solar system cost?
Most UK homes spend £6,000–£12,000 depending on system size and whether a battery is included. A 4kW system is commonly £6,000–£8,000.
Is there VAT on solar panels?
Residential solar and battery installations carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, after which it is expected to revert to 5%.
Does adding a battery make sense?
A battery stores your daytime generation for evening use, increasing how much of your own power you use. It adds several thousand pounds, so whether it pays back depends on your usage pattern and tariff.
